Vitamin D can help protect your child’s bones!
Vitamin D is one of the most important vitamins needed by the body. It has many functions, such as increasing calcium absorption by about 30-80% and helping in its deposition in the bones, and thus is responsible for bone strength.
Without vitamin D, your child’s bones will become brittle, weak and fragile.
Where is vitamin D found?
Cod-liver oil is a rich source of vitamin D. Other food such as eggs, chicken liver, salmon and sardines contain moderate amounts of this vitamin. However, the regular foods eaten by children such as bread, cheese, yogurt, meat, rice, fruits and vegetables are poor sources of vitamin D.
The major source of this vitamin remains the sun’s ultraviolet rays which enable the skin to synthesize vitamin D
Do you know how widespread vitamin D deficiency is in the world?
Vitamin D deficiency is very widespread, that is why preventive measures were taken in America and Europe through fortification of milk with Vitamin D; this led to the reduction in rickets (brittle and bowed bones in children) by 85%.Preventing vitamin D deficiency should be done through encouraging your child to get exposed to sunlight for 20 minutes, 3 times per week and to consume foods fortified with vitamin D, such as fortified milk.
